Dr. Afroza Akter is a psychiatrist, academic, and mental health professional with more than eight years of clinical, academic, and research experience in psychiatry. She completed her MBBS from Holy Family Red Crescent Medical College Hospital, earned her MD in Psychiatry from Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College under Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), and later completed a Master of Public Health (MPH) in Epidemiology from the University of South Asia. She has also received specialised training through the International Bangladesh Dementia Master Class and the WHO Mental Health Gap Action Programme (mhGAP) Training of Trainers & Supervisors.
Throughout her career, she has gained extensive experience in diagnosing, treating, and managing a wide range of psychiatric disorders across diverse age groups. She currently serves as Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the National Institute of Mental Health & Hospital (NIMH), Dhaka, where she combines clinical care with teaching, research, and capacity building. Prior to this, she completed her residency in Psychiatry at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and served as a Medical Officer at Upazila Health Complex, Monohardi, Narsingdi, providing comprehensive mental health and community healthcare services.
Dr. Akter has played an active role in advancing psychiatric services and professional development in Bangladesh. She contributed to establishing a specialised Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Clinic, organised psychotherapy workshops for OCD, anxiety disorders, and major depressive disorder, and coordinated several national and international psychiatry conferences. Her research focuses on obsessive compulsive disorder, sexual dysfunction, quality of life, and suicide risk, with multiple peer-reviewed publications in national and international scientific journals.
She also serves as a Psychiatrist at Moner Bondhu, where she provides expert psychiatric consultation, evidence-based treatment, and clinical supervision while contributing to research, mental health programme development, and professional capacity building. Fluent in both Bangla and English, she is committed to promoting accessible, high-quality mental healthcare and strengthening psychiatric services across Bangladesh.
