Dr. Syeda Fatema Alam is a medical doctor, public health specialist, and global mental health leader with over seven years of experience designing and implementing scalable, evidence-based mental health programmes in complex and crisis-affected settings. She holds an MBBS from Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and an MPH from North South University, is currently completing the Leadership in Medicine programme at Harvard Medical School, and holds advanced clinical training in psychiatry alongside specialised training in Mental Health in Complex Emergencies from Fordham University. She has passed MRCPsych Papers A and B (Royal College of Psychiatrists) and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Public Health.
Her career spans clinical psychiatry training at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, field-based MHPSS research in the Rohingya refugee camps of Cox's Bazar with UNSW Sydney, and institutional mental health leadership at the Asian University for Women, where she built a comprehensive wellness system from the ground up for a multicultural student community of 2,100+ from 15+ countries. A WHO mhGAP Trainer of Trainers and Psychological First Aid Master Trainer, she has presented at the WPA World Congress of Psychiatry, the European Psychiatric Association Congress, and other international platforms. She is a recipient of the IAP Young Physician Leadership Award in partnership with the World Health Summit, and received direct mentorship from Prof. Graham Thornicroft and Prof. Norman Sartorius.
She currently serves as Psychiatric Expert at Moner Bondhu, where she provides expert psychiatric assessment and care while driving clinical excellence, high-impact research, and the development of the next generation of physician-researchers in Bangladesh. She brings fluency in six languages — English, Bangla, Farsi, Dari, Urdu, and Hindi — and deep familiarity with mental health systems across South Asia, the Middle East, and Sub-Saharan Africa.
